THROWBACK TO THE GOLDEN DAYS OF INDIAN TELEVISION
The television is often referred to as the idiot box . The content and the extent of nuisance shown on TV these days have just become the reason for it. Now the fight is just for sky touching trp and not for showing the audience something new . Only a few shows have content which almost everyone in the audience can relate with. While others are either stuck with superstitions or the daily family drama which is not at all real. Unfortunately a time has come where everyone is looking for some new source of entertainment as the daily soaps have nothing to engage people with. This generation has a disadvantage over the previous ones because they are living in a period where there are multiple channels but hardly any sensible series to watch. The generation in the 80s was blessed with serials which entertained the viewers with their simplicity and relativity without any fights for ratings . So here is a look at some of the TV series that the viewers watched in the 80s :
HUM LOG WAS THE FIRST EVER TELEVISION SERIES TO BE AIRED ON THE INDIAN SUBCONTINENT . IT TELECASTED FIRST TIME ON DOORDARSHAN IN THE YEAR 1984 AND LASTED FOR AN YEAR WITH OVER A HUNDRED EPISODES. THE SERIES GAINED POPULARITY FOR SHOWING THE ASPIRATIONS AND STRUGGLES OF THE INDIAN MIDDLE CLASS FAMILY. IT HAD EVERY ELEMENT IN IT THAT ENGAGED THE AUDIENCES. THE SERIAL HAD CHARACTERS WHICH HAD THEIR OWN INTERESTS AND LIKINGS. THE SERIAL HAD ITS CENTRE ON A FAMILY WITH THREE GENERATIONS AND EVERY MEMBER WAS DIFFERENT FROM ONE ANOTHER. LIKE THERE WAS A FATHER WHO WAS ALCOHOLIC, A RETIRED ARMY OFFICER AS A GRAND FATHER AND AS SON WHO WISHED TO BE A CRICKETER. IT EVEN HAD A DAUGHTER WHO ASPIRED TO BE AN ACTOR , WHO EVEN LEFT HER HOUSE TO FOLLOW HER DREAMS TO ONLY INVITE PROBLEMS TO HER. THE SUCCESS OF THE SHOW WAS IT’S VARIETY WHICH BINDED IT’S VIEWERS TO THEIR TV SETS.
TAMAS WAS ANOTHER TV SERIES WHICH BECAME VERY POPULAR JUST WHEN IT AIRED FOR THE FIRST TIME. IT WAS ORIGINALLY MADE INTO A FILM BUT DUE TO ITS LENGTH IT WAS CONVERTED TO A TV SERIES . TAMAS TELECASTED ON DOOR DARSHAN IN THE YEAR 1988 WITH 6-8 EPISODES AS IT’S WIDTH. THE SERIES WAS BASED ON THE FAMOUS PORTION OF 1947. THE SERIAL FLAWLESSLY DEPICTED THE TIME OF PARTION AND SHOWCASED THE EMOTIONS OF PEOPLE AT THAT TIME. IT SHOWED EVERYTHING WITH INTENSITY THAT GLUED THE AUDIENCES. TAMAS WAS REALLY CLOSE TO REALITY AND SHOWED HOW EVEN A SMALL SPARK COULD LEAD TO BLOODSHED AMONGST THE VARIOUS SECTIONS OF THE SOCIETY AT THAT TIME. THE SUCCESS OF THE SHOW WAS THE FACT THAT IT WAS THE FIRST TIME SOMETHING OF THAT PLOT WAS SHOWN TO PEOPLE.
