IF THE SUN EXPLODED, HOW LONG WOULD LIFE ON EARTH SURVIVE?
Imagine a situation, it is early morning. You have just finished your Surya Namaskar, a yoga event, and suddenly the sun went out. This phenomenon will not be like switching off the bulb, the sun will actually EXPLODE. When the sun runs out of fuel, it will explode. Sun is the only star which keeps the earth warm. So, if sun exploded, within one or two weeks the temperature will drop to -100 °C. And when the temperature is this low, the top layer of oceans would freeze and within 2 weeks mankind will extinct. A study tells us that ice would insulate the deep water and prevent the oceans from freezing solid for hundreds of thousands of years. So mankind could be saved from this apocalypse if we start to live the deep oceans. Which is nearly impossible!
But the question is, how can this happen? Well, as we know, nothing is immortal. Sun is also mortal. Sun is a star and when iron (metal) starts forming in the core of sun, it will explode. Now the question is, how iron can be formed in the sun’s core? It is one of the many theories that hydrogen and hydrogen will combine to give helium and then helium combined with hydrogen of itself, to give beryllium or lithium and then oxygen and neon and this process will continue until the iron is formed. So, when the iron is formed boom…. The sun will explode like other stars and when this happens, it will affect the earth.
If the sun exploded, the probability of anything in the solar system surviving would be just zero. Fortunately, there is no reason to believe that the sun will ever explode. More worrisome is that in about 5 billion years, the sun will run out of hydrogen fuel. When that happens, the sun will enter the red giant stage and become
very large and luminous. This will cause all sorts of problems, especially if the sun becomes bigger in radius than the earth’s orbit.
What can be done?
Well according to physicists the sun will be out in 5 million years, which means we have time, lots of time to think about what will happen if sun explodes. But some scientists are finding new planets where we can live when sun goes out. NASA is finding planets which looks like Earth or where human kind can survive.
On July 23, 2015, NASA’s Kepler mission confirmed the first near-Earth-size planet in the “habitable zone” around a sun very similar to our star. The name of the planet is kepler-186f. There are many planets in this universe yet we are not able to find dupli of Earth. Maybe someday we find Earth-2.
